The Volunteer Fire Assistance Program (VFA), formerly know as the Rural Community Fire Protection Program, provides matching fund grants to eligible rural volunteer fire departments (VFDs) for the purchase of firefighting equipment. The Mississippi Forestry Commission administers this program through an agreement with the USDA Forest Service. Since 1975, when Congress first funded the Rural Community Fire Protection (RCFP) program, 999 grants of up to $2,000 have been issued to rural volunteers fire departments in Mississippi.
